® Our Director,
Dawn Elmer
Our director, Dawn Elmer, started the Post Falls Music Academy in 2011 with a mission to bring quality music instruction and performance opportunities for the North Idaho community. Her passion is to share the joy of learning to play music with a goal to gain a life long love of music.
Dawn is originally from Texas and received much of her music instruction in the Lone Star State. She received her Bachelors of Music from Texas Tech University in 1994 and went on to earn her Masters of Music from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston. In 1995 she was awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to attend the Brussels Conservatory of Music. In that year she was able to complete her Premier Prix “First Prize” award in Clarinet Performance, Chamber Music Performance, and Solfegge. Her studies there were also entirely in French.
She was a two time finalist winner of the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition and has performed with numerous orchestras around the world including the Houston Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, the Belgian National Orchestra, Lubbock Symphony, and the Dos Hermanos Symphony in Seville, Spain.
She is a registered teacher and center director of Music Together®, the nationally recognized early childhood music education curriculum. She was fortunate to have received hands-on training by the actual co-founder of the program, Lili M. Levinowitz.
Dawn is also a student of the Suzuki method and has been mentored by several master Suzuki instructors. She incorporates this into her teaching as well as using traditional teaching methods.
Her passion for music and performance can be seen with the Academy’s focus on performing and providing the students lots of opportunities to shine on their instrument.
She can be seen performing in professional groups such as the Coeur d'Alene Symphony, Spokane Civic Theater, Coeur d'Alene Summer Theater, and the Sandpoint Music Festival.
She also regularly performs with her harp/flute duo, Turquoise & Co. with co-member Jennifer Hille.
When not teaching or performing, she enjoys hanging out with her grown up kiddos, traveling with her hubby, and taking care of her chickens and dogs.
