Parenting is incredibly rewarding—but also challenging. Children’s moods and attitudes can shift quickly, and this often shows up in their approach to music lessons. The good news? Much of this behavior is completely normal.
First, it’s common for kids to want to try different instruments. Young children are naturally curious and still discovering what they enjoy. Exploring new instruments isn’t a lack of commitment—it’s part of finding the right fit. In fact, learning multiple instruments can strengthen overall musical understanding.
Second, if your child loses interest quickly, it may simply mean the instrument isn’t the right match. A small change can make a big difference. Many kids who struggle with one instrument thrive when they switch to another. It’s okay to pivot and explore.
Third, practice isn’t always fun—and that’s normal too. Most kids experience some resistance. Creating the right environment can help. Some children do best in a shared space, while others prefer quiet and privacy. Supporting their preferences can improve consistency and reduce frustration.
Finally, music should extend beyond lessons. Incorporating music into daily life—listening at home, singing in the car, or playing together—helps children form a natural connection to it.
There will be ups and downs. Some days will feel harder than others. But with patience, consistency, and encouragement, your child will grow—not just as a musician, but in confidence and resilience.

We are pleased to announce Elric as the Post Falls Music Academy student of the month!
Elric is 12 years old and has been studying violin since January! He is a 7th grader at S.T.E.M.
His favorite color is dark green. He loves to eat sushi. Yum!
His favorite song to play is “Allegro.” His favorite song to listen to is “Vivaldi Winter.”
When he is not playing the piano, Elric likes to play video games and make video games!
His teacher, Lorraine, says: “Elric goes out of his way to research when he has questions - He has a real want to learn and grow. He’s humble and doesn’t easily accept compliments but he deserves all the praise for his fast progress and willingness to go home and do the work on his own.
Congratulations Elric for your hard work and awesome attitude.
