Being a “music parent” can be just as demanding as being a “sports parent.” While sports often involve daily practices, weekly games, and travel, music brings its own busy schedule — daily practice, recitals, performances, and even weekend competitions as kids grow older. For example, many parents spend weekends in the fall attending marching band competitions. The bottom line? Your involvement in your child’s musical journey is essential.
Just like sports parents help their kids practice skills in the backyard, music parents should be hands-on during practice. Sit with your child at the piano, help with scales and exercises, and take notes during lessons. Young musicians need guidance to build routines and manage progress. As they grow, you can begin shifting
responsibility to them while continuing to provide support and accountability.
Speaking of accountability, it’s important to help your child stay consistent with practice — but how you do it matters. Instead of using punishment or negative reinforcement, opt for positive motivators. Try a reward system like a sticker chart that leads to a small toy, special outing, or favorite dinner. Encouragement is far more effective than pressure or discipline.
That said, it’s also important not to become a “helicopter parent.” Over-involvement can lead to frustration or burnout. Aim to support your child in a way that’s encouraging, not overbearing. Find a balance that works for both of you.
Another great way to stay involved is by simply sharing a love of music. Listen to songs together, talk about different genres, watch music videos, or build playlists. These shared moments not only grow your child’s appreciation for music but also strengthen your connection.
As your child’s musical journey evolves, your role may shift. Sometimes you’ll need to be more hands-on; other times, you’ll step back. What matters most is staying present, supportive, and engaged. Your involvement can make a huge difference in your child’s growth and success.
Keep showing up — it matters more than you know.

We are pleased to announce Eisley as the Post Falls Music Academy student of the month!
Eisley is 11 years old and has been studying piano & ukulele for 5 years. She is a 6th grader homeschooled.
Her favorite color is pink. She loves to eat chicken strips. Yum!
Her favorite song to play is “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”
When she is not playing piano, Eisley likes to do fiber arts!
Her teacher, Mr. Ray, says: “Eisley is always cheerful and attentive when arriving for her weekly piano lessons. If something is not clear, she will ask questions. Eisley rehearses her music regularly and show consistent progress in performing music assigned. Following piano lessons, she has weekly ukulele lessons at PFMA. Eisley enjoys playing & learning music. She brings joy to those who are working with her. "
